Bhubaneswar: A 34-year-old man was killed after a speeding SUV allegedly rammed into his motorcycle near Shastri Nagar Square in Bhubaneswar late on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Debi Prasad Routray.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the victim sustained fatal injuries. The incident also triggered tension as angry locals intercepted the SUV and attempted to assault its occupants.
According to reports, the accident occurred at around 10:30 pm when the SUV allegedly collided head-on with the motorcycle ridden by Routray. The force of the impact completely mangled the two-wheeler and flung the rider onto the road.
Local residents and passers-by rushed to the spot immediately after the crash and shifted the critically injured Routray to Capital Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The accident sparked outrage among bystanders after the SUV driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene. Enraged locals blocked the vehicle, detained the driver and a woman passenger travelling in the SUV, and allegedly tried to assault them before police intervened.
Upon receiving information about the incident, personnel from Kharavel Nagar Police Station reached the spot. The police rescued the driver and the woman from the agitated crowd and took them to the police station for questioning.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
