Jayapur: Police have arrested three persons in connection with the murder of a man and the assault on three others following an alleged dispute rooted in old enmity at Sindhigaon village under Jayapur Sadar police station limits in Koraput district.
The accused have been identified as Gopinath Gadba (50), Tripati Gadba (26) and Prafulla Gadba (23), all residents of Sindhigaon. They have been produced before a local court after their arrest.
According to police, the incident took place on the evening of July 15 when the accused allegedly called Abhinav Gadba, Tukuna Gadba and Pradip Gadba to a spot near the Trinath Mandap in front of the village Anganwadi Centre on the pretext of holding a discussion.
Investigators said the three accused allegedly launched a sudden attack using sharp-edged weapons and other lethal objects. Abhinav Gadba sustained grievous injuries and died at the scene, while Tukuna Gadba and Pradip Gadba suffered serious injuries. Tukuna, who sustained a fractured hand, is undergoing treatment at Shaheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput.
Police said Bhagirathi Gadba’s wife was also assaulted during the incident and sustained injuries. A complaint lodged by Bhagirathi Gadba led to the registration of Jayapur Sadar Police Station Case No. 235/26.
A scientific team examined the crime scene, while SDPO Achhita Mittal supervised the investigation. During the probe, police recovered a knife allegedly used in the crime after it had been thrown into the Dhoba pond near Nuasahi. Efforts are underway to recover the remaining weapons.
Security has been intensified in Sindhigaon to prevent any further escalation. The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after postmortem examination.
Jayapur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sachindra Pradhan said the investigation is continuing to ascertain the role of all those involved in the incident.
