BMC, BDA Launch Pilot Project For Green Traffic, Commuter Sheds On Bhubaneswar’s Janpath

Bhubaneswar: In a move aimed at improving commuter convenience and creating climate-responsive urban infrastructure, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) have launched a pilot project to install modern traffic and parking-cum-commuter sheds at key locations along the Janpath corridor.

The project, being implemented under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), seeks to enhance public amenities while contributing to greener and more aesthetically appealing urban spaces as part of efforts to improve air quality through sustainable infrastructure.

Under the initiative, modern traffic sheds are being developed at Rupali Square and Power House Square, two of the city’s busiest intersections. In addition, four parking-cum-commuter sheds are being constructed at strategically selected locations along the 5.8-km Smart Janpath corridor to cater to pedestrians, commuters and motorists.

BMC Commissioner and BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana said the sheds have been designed to combine functionality, aesthetics and sustainability. A key feature of the project is the use of Flame Vine creepers over fabric canopies, which will gradually create a natural green cover to reduce heat absorption during summer and provide a cooler, more comfortable environment for people waiting at traffic junctions and parking areas.

The traffic shelters will also feature specially designed horizontal screening panels between support columns to block direct sunlight from different angles throughout the day, offering better protection from harsh weather conditions.

The parking-cum-commuter sheds have been designed to protect both commuters and parked vehicles from rain and excessive heat while serving as convenient waiting areas. The facilities are expected to particularly benefit senior citizens, pregnant women and other vulnerable commuters.

Officials said the pilot project complements the ongoing beautification and landscaping of the Smart Janpath corridor and aligns with the city’s vision of developing greener, pedestrian-friendly and citizen-centric public spaces.
