New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday extended greetings to all CRPF personnel on the paramilitary force’s Raising Day, highlighting how it has distinguished itself through its unwavering courage and commitment to duty.

“Greetings to all CRPF personnel on their Raising Day. The CRPF has distinguished itself through its unwavering courage and commitment to duty. From safeguarding internal security to serving citizens during challenging situations, CRPF personnel have always placed the nation first. Their efforts in eliminating the menace of Maoism are particularly notable and have contributed to peace and progress in the lives of several people”, he said in a post on X.

CRPF Raising Day is observed annually on July 27 to commemorate the establishment of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), India’s largest Central Armed Police Force. The occasion pays tribute to the unwavering dedication, courage and sacrifices of CRPF personnel, who play a vital role in safeguarding the nation’s internal security, maintaining law and order, and assisting civil authorities during emergencies.

In 2026, the force marks 88 years since its inception on July 27, 1939. Guided by its motto, “Service and Loyalty”, the CRPF has evolved into a cornerstone of India’s internal security framework, making significant contributions to preserving the country’s unity, integrity and sovereignty.

Over the decades, the force has expanded into a highly organised security organisation with an extensive operational and administrative network. It also comprises specialised units such as the Rapid Action Force (RAF), which is trained for riot control and handling communal disturbances, and the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), which specialises in counter-insurgency and anti-Maoist operations.

The legacy of the CRPF is built on exceptional bravery and selfless service. Since its inception, 2,270 personnel have laid down their lives in the line of duty, reflecting the force’s unwavering commitment to protecting the nation under the most challenging circumstances.

Operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the CRPF is entrusted with maintaining internal security and supporting state police forces in restoring peace and order. Its responsibilities extend across a wide range of operations, including riot control, crowd management, anti-insurgency missions, anti-militancy operations and combating Left Wing Extremism in affected regions.

The CRPF also plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth conduct of elections across the country. It is regularly deployed in sensitive and conflict-prone areas to provide security, uphold democratic processes and maintain public confidence during polling.

Originally established as the Crown Representative’s Police during the British era in 1939, the force was restructured after Independence and officially renamed the Central Reserve Police Force through the CRPF Act of December 28, 1949. Today, it remains one of India’s oldest and most respected security forces, continuing to serve the nation with professionalism, discipline and an unwavering sense of duty.
