Gujarat Provides Over Rs 14 Cr In Free Treatment To 14,925 Sickle Cell Patients In Four Years

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has provided more than Rs 14.57 crore in free medical assistance to over 14,925 patients suffering from sickle cell anaemia over the past four financial years, as it continues to expand efforts to improve early diagnosis, treatment and long-term care for the inherited blood disorder, particularly in tribal areas of the state.

According to the Tribal Development Department, financial assistance has been extended under the state’s ‘Free Medical Assistance Scheme’ during the period from 2023-24 to 2026-27.

The support is intended to help patients access treatment while reducing the financial burden associated with managing the chronic condition.

Beyond financial assistance, the government said it has adopted a broader healthcare strategy aimed at controlling the disease and improving patient outcomes.

Large-scale screening campaigns are being conducted across tribal regions to facilitate early detection of sickle cell anaemia, while diagnosed patients are being provided with regular medication, continuous follow-up care and access to specialist medical guidance.

“Awareness campaigns are also being carried out in rural and remote areas through coordinated efforts involving ASHA workers, healthcare personnel and local administrative authorities. These campaigns are intended to improve public awareness of the disease and encourage timely diagnosis and treatment,” official said.

For patients requiring advanced medical intervention, the government said referral mechanisms and higher-level treatment facilities have been strengthened to ensure timely access to quality healthcare.

It added that “its efforts are being undertaken in coordination with the Central government’s national mission for the elimination of sickle cell anaemia”.

“The state government remains fully committed to the overall health and welfare of the tribal community. Joint and coordinated efforts by the Health Department and the Tribal Development Department for the effective control and eradication of sickle cell anaemia will continue to be intensified and expanded in the coming years,” the department said.

Sickle cell anaemia disproportionately affects tribal populations in Gujarat, where screening, early diagnosis and continuous treatment have been key components of the state’s public health strategy to reduce complications associated with the disease.
