Bhubaneswar: The Ganjam District Child Protection Unit has rescued three minor girls from Chhatrapur railway station while they were being trafficked to work in a shrimp factory in the Gudiwada area of Andhra Pradesh.
Of the rescued minors, two belong to the Purushottampur and Chhatrapur areas, while the third is from Puri district.
According to sources, a trafficker identified as A. Maguni Patra from the Kabisuryanagar area brought the girls to Chhatrapur railway station by a bus. His plan was to take them onward to Andhra Pradesh on the Puri-Tirupati train.
Acting on a tip-off, officials of the District Child Protection Unit reached the station and rescued the girls. The trafficker has also been detained and is being questioned. Further investigation is underway.
Officials found that the rescued girls had previously worked at the same shrimp factory. After returning home for a few days, they were again heading there for work when the Child Protection Unit intercepted them.
Information has also emerged that a large number of minor girls from Ganjam and other districts have been employed in this shrimp factory.
