Delhi-NCR Wakes Up To Pleasant Weather, IMD Forecasts Rainfall Till August 16

New Delhi: Delhi-NCR residents on Tuesday woke up to pleasant weather conditions, with light winds and cloudy skies prevailing across the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall in the national capital and adjoining areas until August 16.

India is likely to witness another active spell of monsoon weather beginning Tuesday, with the IMD predicting widespread rainfall across several parts of the country. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of northwest, central, eastern, northeastern and western India in the coming days. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are also likely to affect several states during this period.

According to the IMD, the monsoon trough remains active and is positioned south of its normal location in the lower tropospheric levels. A low-pressure area over north Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions, along with other weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and central India, is expected to influence rainfall activity across large parts of the country.

The weather department has also warned of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in some regions, including East Rajasthan and parts of Madhya Pradesh.

Delhi and Haryana are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall on August 11, with another spell of rain expected on August 13. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on both August 11 and August 13.

The national capital may also experience thunderstorms and lightning during this active monsoon phase. Residents have been advised to remain alert for sudden heavy showers, waterlogging and possible traffic disruptions, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

West Uttar Pradesh is expected to receive heavy rainfall on August 11, while East Uttar Pradesh may witness widespread rainfall activity later in the week. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall over West Uttar Pradesh on August 14 and 15, while East Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rain between August 13 and 15.

Delhi recently recorded its wettest August day in two years. On Saturday, the Safdarjung observatory registered 98.7 mm of rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. The last time the city recorded higher rainfall on an August day was on August 1, 2024, when 107.6 mm of rain was measured.

According to the IMD, Delhi’s mean total rainfall for August, based on the 1991-2020 climatological period, is 226.8 mm. The cumulative rainfall recorded so far has already crossed the monthly average by 3.3 mm.

The active monsoon conditions are being driven by multiple weather systems. The monsoon trough remains south of its normal position, while a low-pressure area over north Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas continues to influence rainfall over central and northwest India.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas is also important. Under its influence, the IMD expects another low-pressure area to form over the same region around August 12.
