Dhenkanal: A history-sheeter was critically injured after three unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire on him at Jharabeda village under Balimi police station in Dhenkanal district on Wednesday morning.
The victim, identified as Binaya Nayak, sustained multiple bullet injuries and was later referred to Anugola District Headquarters Hospital after his condition deteriorated.
According to reports, the incident occurred in broad daylight while Binaya Nayak was in the village. Three motorcycle-borne miscreants allegedly intercepted him and fired around 10 rounds, with several bullets hitting his thigh. The attackers then allegedly threw him into a nearby pond before fleeing the spot.
Hearing the gunshots, villagers rushed to the scene and, along with the victim’s family members, rescued Binaya from the pond. He was initially taken to Hindol Sub-Divisional Hospital. As his condition turned critical, doctors referred him to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Anugola for advanced treatment.
Upon receiving information, a team from Balimi police station reached the spot, secured the area and launched an investigation.
Police said the motive behind the attack is yet to be established. They further stated that Binaya Nayak has several criminal cases registered against him at different police stations in the district and is listed as a history-sheeter.
Further investigation is underway.
