Bhubaneswar: A tiger predating on a deer inside the Tiger Safari area of Nandankanan Zoological Park has sparked discussion, after tourists captured the incident on their mobile phones about four days ago.
According to officials, the incident occurred when a tiger in the safari area hunted a deer that had entered the enclosure. Tourists present at the spot witnessed the predation and recorded photos and videos, which have since gone viral on social media.
The incident has raised questions about how a deer entered the carnivore enclosure in a controlled environment like a zoo. Normally, zoos maintain separate enclosures for carnivorous and herbivorous animals and have a fixed feeding schedule for predators.
The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has laid down guidelines for zoo management, animal safety and feeding protocols.
Clarifying the matter, the Deputy Director of Nandankanan said that since the zoo is located within the Chandaka Sanctuary, the incident does not amount to a violation of CZA rules. Officials also noted that movement of wildlife in the area is common due to the zoo’s proximity to the sanctuary.
Authorities are probing whether the deer was already present in the area or entered the safari enclosure from the adjoining sanctuary.
Following the incident, Nandankanan zoo authorities said they are reviewing all aspects of the case, including security arrangements and monitoring of animal movement inside the safari.
A detailed report will be prepared after the investigation is complete to ascertain how the tiger and deer came into contact and to suggest measures to prevent such occurrences in future.
