Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident in flood-affected Kapasuda village under Jaleswar police station in Baleshwar district, an elderly woman and her grandson died after wall of a neighbouring house collapsed on them while they were asleep on Sunday night. The deceased woman’s granddaughter has been critically injured, while three other family members have also been injured.
According to reports, Radhika Jena (65), wife of the late Narendra Jena, her grandson Jyoti Prakash Swain (18) and granddaughter Smruti Rekha Swain (18) were sleeping near the doorway of their house as usual. Around 9:30 pm, the wall of the neighbouring houses belonging to Banshidhar Jena and Gangadhar Jena suddenly collapsed onto the asbestos roof of Radhika’s house. As a result, Radhika and Jyoti Prakash died on the spot, while Smruti Rekha sustained serious injuries.
Notably, Jyoti Prakash and Smruti Rekha were twin siblings. At the time of the incident, Radhika’s son Uttam (31), daughter-in-law Debirani (25), and two young granddaughters — Ananya (5) and Aaradhya (2 months) — were also sleeping inside the house. Uttam and the two-month-old Aaradhya were injured in the collapse. All household belongings were crushed under the debris and destroyed.
On receiving information, Jaleswar Block Development Officer Gouranga Charan Ghosh, along with other administrative officials and several political leaders, reached Jaleswar GK Bhatter Hospital and enquired about the condition of the injured. The critically injured granddaughter has been referred for further treatment.
