Jayapur (Koraput): A long-running dispute between two neighbours over pigs allegedly straying into a residential compound turned deadly in Odisha’s Koraput district, leaving one man dead and his father critically injured in an attack with a sharp weapon late on Sunday night.
Police have detained the accused and launched an investigation into the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Jagabandhu Kamar, while his father, Raghunath Kamar, is undergoing treatment for critical injuries. The incident took place at Kamta village under Borigumma block in Koraput district.
According to reports, the accused, Sonu Jani, had been rearing pigs at his house. The animals frequently entered the neighbouring residence of Raghunath Kamar, triggering repeated arguments between the two families. Despite several warnings from Raghunath, the issue allegedly remained unresolved, leading to growing hostility.
The two sides had clashed earlier over the same issue, during which Sonu allegedly assaulted Raghunath and Jagabandhu. He was arrested in connection with the case and was later released on bail. After his release, the accused allegedly nursed a grudge against the family. On Sunday night, another altercation reportedly broke out between the neighbours.
During the confrontation, Sonu allegedly attacked Jagabandhu with a bhujali (a sharp weapon), inflicting a fatal injury to his abdomen. When Raghunath tried to intervene, he too was allegedly attacked.
Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Jagabandhu dead. Raghunath, who sustained serious injuries, is currently undergoing treatment.
In a dramatic turn of events, the accused reportedly suffered a severe head injury after falling while attempting to flee the spot. He was later taken into police custody and admitted to a hospital for treatment under police guard.
A team from B. Singhpur Police Station reached the village soon after receiving information about the incident, seized the alleged murder weapon, and began an investigation. A forensic team also visited the crime scene to collect scientific evidence.
Further investigation is underway.
