IESA Urges BRICS To Deepen Cooperation On Energy Storage, Mineral Security

New Delhi: Leading industry body, the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), in its unified recommendations to the Central government urged BRICS nations to strengthen cooperation on advanced energy storage technologies and mineral security, a statement said on Tuesday.

The industry body stressed BRICS collaboration during a virtual event organised by the Ministry of Power, in which officials from Brazil, Russia and the United Arab Emirates were in attendance.

“The initiative aims to accelerate India’s clean energy transition by deepening international collaboration on advanced energy storage technologies, developing resilient local supply chains, and ensuring timely access to critical minerals vital for achieving the nation’s ambitious renewable energy targets,” the statement noted.

India’s clean industrial investment pipeline has reached an estimated $433 billion placing the country among the world’s top three centres for clean industrial development.

The investments span across 65 projects in 11 states and the pipeline has grown 30 per cent in six months, fueled by surging investment in green hydrogen, renewable-energy-based manufacturing, and forward-thinking industrial policies focused on energy security, the statement said.

Projects span across four sectors and 11 states, and India is rapidly advancing in clean fuels, chemicals, and low-carbon manufacturing.

“Energy storage is now essential for both grid flexibility and resilience as renewable integration rises. No single technology can meet all system needs; diverse solutions and strong BRICS collaboration across value chains, manufacturing, and innovation are critical,” said Debmalya Sen, President of IESA.

The country’s energy storage project pipeline has exceeded 100 GW with around 10 GW commissioned. Green ammonia leads the sector with the largest share of new projects, while sustainable aviation fuel, green methanol, and low-carbon aluminium also show growing momentum.

Experts stressed expanding PLI support to recycling and advanced chemistries, and dedicated allocations for stationary storage.

IESA also called for mutual recognition of test reports, harmonised measurement protocols, and coordinated pilot projects to unlock distributed storage potential across the BRICS nations.

Experts from India’s TERI and Brazil’s Electric Sector Studies Group (GESEL/UFRJ) emphasised the transformative potential of long-duration energy storage, while UAE and Russian leaders highlighted the urgency for supportive regulation and standardised techno-economic assessment.
