Dhenkanal: The carcass of a female elephant was found near Srimantapur village under the Sadangi Forest Range in Dhenkanal district on Monday.
Forest officials suspect the animal died due to electrocution after coming into contact with a solar fence wire.
As per reports, the carcass of the elephant was found lying in a field near Srimantapur village under the Tolarpasi beat under Sadangi range in Dhenkanal district. A solar wire fence near the animal was found broken and fallen, leading to suspicion that the elephant died after coming into contact with the electrified fence.
After receiving information from local villagers, forest department personnel reached the spot and launched an investigation. A youth named Mian Guia from Srimantapur village has been detained by the forest department for questioning in connection with the incident.
Officials stated that the exact cause of the elephant’s death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is received.
The discovery once again highlights the continuing human-elephant conflict in the district. With more than 300 elephants moving across various areas, such incidents resulting in deaths of both elephants and humans, along with widespread crop and property damage, have become frequent.
Villagers informed the Forest Department after spotting the elephant.
A team of forest staff reached the spot and launched an investigation into the cause of death.
The Forest officials are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, particularly the role of the solar fencing in the area.
