Bhubaneswar: The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bhubaneswar has completed a decade of clinical service, reconstructive surgery, academic training and surgical innovation, marking the milestone with a two-day National CME programme and live surgical workshop on secondary procedures in brachial plexus injury.

The programme, held on August 21 and 22, brought together more than 100 delegates from across the country and featured expert lectures, live and video surgical demonstrations, poster presentations and a quiz focusing on advanced procedures aimed at restoring shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand functions in patients with brachial plexus injuries.

The 36-bedded Burn Centre at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, dedicated to comprehensive burn management, is among the advanced burn care facilities in eastern India. Over the past 10 years, the centre has treated more than 1,500 burn patients, including critical cases from Odisha and neighbouring states, besides providing skin allograft support to burn victims referred from other healthcare institutions.

The department’s decade-long clinical work is reflected in more than 7,000 reconstructive and corrective surgeries. These include over 500 microsurgeries, 300 brachial plexus injury reconstructions, 300 congenital anomaly corrections, 200 Smile Train cleft lip and palate surgeries, more than 250 RBSK cases and around 3,000 trauma cases.

The department has outlined plans to establish specialised subspecialty clinics, strengthen simulation-based surgical training, expand hyperbaric oxygen therapy, initiate hand transplantation and establish a Skin Bank and Tissue Transplantation Unit.

It also aims to develop the Burn Centre into a Centre of Excellence in Burn Care, with greater emphasis on advanced treatment, research, innovation, rehabilitation and surgical training.

Congratulating the department and its stakeholders on completing a decade, AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr Ashutosh Biswas appreciated the contributions of the Burn Centre and expressed confidence that the department would achieve several more milestones in the coming years.

The anniversary programme was attended by Dr Sambit Patra, Member of Parliament from Puri Lok Sabha constituency, and Padmashree Prof (Dr) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, former Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, as chief guests.

The programme was organised under the leadership of Dr Sanjay Kumar Giri, Head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery. Dr Dillip Kumar Parida, Dr Manaswini Mangaraj, Dr Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy, Medical Superintendent Lt Col Abhijit Sarkar, DDA Dr Praveen Bhardwaj, Dr R Srikanth and Dr Binayak Mishra were among those present.

The scientific sessions focused on secondary procedures for brachial plexus injuries, providing participants with exposure to advanced reconstructive techniques through lectures, live surgeries and video demonstrations.
