Dhenkanal: Two persons have been arrested and a forest department forester suspended in connection with the death of an elephant in Dhenkanal, officials said on Tuesday.
According to a statement issued by the Forest Department, the action was taken on the basis of preliminary findings and an assessment of negligence in the discharge of official duties following the elephant’s death reported on Monday.
The arrested persons were identified as 25-year-old Manas Goia, son of Baidhara of Srimantapur under Nihalaprasad police station, and 25-year-old Kusa Sidhu, son of Bisu of the same locality. Further investigation is underway to ascertain their alleged role and the circumstances that led to the elephant’s death.
The department has also suspended Prakash Kumar Barik, a forester, for alleged negligence in the discharge of his duties in connection with the incident. Departmental proceedings will be initiated against him in accordance with the applicable rules.
In addition, one member of the Elephant Squad has been disengaged from the squad for alleged negligence in carrying out assigned responsibilities.
The Forest Department said it has initiated both legal and departmental action against those found prima facie responsible or negligent. Further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and departmental proceedings.
