Bhubaneswar: Odisha has achieved its full seasonal monsoon rainfall target nearly a month ahead of schedule, informed the India Meteorological Department.
As of 31 August 2026, the state has recorded 1,154.3 mm of monsoon rainfall, surpassing the normal June–September rainfall of 1,150.2 mm.
According to data from the IMD’s Hydromet Division, rainfall during the period from June 1 to August 31 stood at 1,154.3 mm against the normal of 914.5 mm for these three months, registering a 26 per cent excess.
Despite a significant 47 per cent deficit in June, the monsoon recovered strongly in the subsequent months, enabling Odisha to cross its full seasonal quota by the end of August.
On the all-India subdivision rainfall map for June–August 2026, Odisha is marked in the excess category (20–59 per cent above normal), while the country as a whole recorded a 14 per cent deficit (actual 603.7 mm against normal 700.7 mm).
The early fulfilment of the monsoon target is expected to benefit agriculture and water resources in the state, though the weather experts continue to monitor the remaining period of the southwest monsoon.
