Bhubaneswar: Renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik and sand animation artist Manas Sahoo marked Janmashtami on Friday with their creative depictions of Lord Krishna through sand art.
At Puri Beach, Pattnaik created an elaborate sand sculpture portraying the childhood form of Lord Krishna, surrounded by 101 Makhan Handis. The installation depicted young Krishna enjoying Makhan (butter), with a flute and a cow placed nearby, while several pots filled with Makhan and Dahi (curd) added to the theme.
The intricate sculpture attracted attention for its depiction of Bal Krishna and the traditional elements associated with his childhood. Pattnaik shared photographs of the artwork on X and extended his wishes to people on the occasion of Janmashtami.
“Happy Janmashtami! On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, I created a devotional sand sculpture of Lord Krishna with 101 Makhan Handis at Puri Beach, Odisha. Through this sand art, I convey my heartfelt wishes for peace, happiness and prosperity to everyone,” Pattnaik wrote.
Meanwhile, Manas Sahoo also marked the festival with a sand animation dedicated to Lord Krishna. His animation portrayed the childhood form of Krishna through a sequence of artistic visuals, highlighting the playful and divine persona of the Hindu deity.
Sahoo’s sand animation offered a different artistic interpretation of Krishna, using movement and changing sand imagery to narrate the theme. The work was also shared on social media on the occasion of Janmashtami.
Janmashtami, celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, is being observed across the country on Friday. Devotees are marking the festival with prayers, religious rituals and cultural programmes.
The sand artworks by Pattnaik and Sahoo added a creative dimension to the celebrations in Odisha, combining traditional devotion with contemporary forms of artistic expression.
