Malkangiri: Incessant rain triggered by a low-pressure area has thrown normal life out of gear in Malkangiri district, with major bridges submerged and road connectivity snapped.

As per reports, heavy rains have submerged the Poteru and Kankurukonda bridges in the district, with floodwater flowing about two to three feet high over the bridges since Thursday evening. Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded on both sides, disrupting connectivity between Malkangiri and Motu/Kalimela on National Highway 326.

According to the district administration, the low-pressure-induced continuous rain for the last two days has led to a rise in water levels of various rivers and streams. An ODRAF team has reached Poteru to monitor the flood situation. Heavy rain has disrupted normal life, with several low-lying bridges submerged and connectivity to Kalimela and Podia blocks affected.

Keeping the situation in mind, the Malkangiri Collector has cancelled leave of all government employees and ordered officials to monitor the situation. A 36-member ODRAF team has been deployed to manage the possible flood situation.

As per data from 8 am on September10  to 8 am on September 11, the district recorded a total of 524.8 mm rainfall with an average of 74.97 mm. During this period, Malkangiri recorded 122.6 mm, Mathili 110 mm, Korukonda 94 mm, Khairput 82 mm, Chitrakonda 69 mm, Kalimela 35 mm and Podia 12.2 mm.

As per the district administration data from 8 am on September 11 to 8 am on September 12, the district has recorded a total of 804 mm rainfall, with an average rainfall of 114.87 mm. Malkangiri block recorded 136.8 mm rainfall, followed by Chitrakonda with the highest 192 mm, Khairput 142 mm, Korukonda 134 mm, Mathili and Kalimela 85 mm each, and Podia 29.3 mm.
