New Delhi: Indian leaders on Saturday welcomed the BRICS Summit being hosted in New Delhi, describing it as an important opportunity to strengthen the country’s global standing, expand trade avenues, and deepen diplomatic engagement.

Shiv Sena leader Manisha Kayande said the BRICS Summit is a significant event for India, with leaders from some of the world’s major countries participating.

“BRICS is a very important event for India. At a time when the world is witnessing war-like situations because of tensions involving the US, India’s role has been very important. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also played a significant role,” she said, adding that hosting the summit was a matter of great honour for the country.

Senior BJP leader Nirmal Singh said the summit reflected Prime Minister Modi’s vision and India’s growing importance on the global stage. He said the participation of representatives from developed countries demonstrated the stature India had acquired under PM Modi’s leadership. He also recalled the Prime Minister’s calls for peace during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said the BRICS Summit is highly significant for India and could open new avenues for trade.

He said PM Modi had established himself as a global leader and a popular figure internationally. Interactions taking place during the summit, including with leaders of China and Russia, could create new opportunities for Indian businesses, he added. Pathak congratulated the Prime Minister on the successful hosting of the summit.

Kerala Minister K. Muraleedharan said the participation of the Russian President and his bilateral meeting with PM Modi assumes significance at a time when the world was facing multiple conflicts.

He said India and Russia had remained long-standing partners and held annual summits, adding that there was considerable scope for both countries to work together towards building a world free from conflict and tensions. Muraleedharan said the BRICS Summit hosted by India would prove to be a milestone. He noted that India is among the founding members of the original BRICS grouping.

“Now we have an expanded BRICS, but its objectives remain the same,” he said, adding that India supported a just world order based on the rule of law and sought a peaceful world focused on the welfare of all.

He said India was committed to sustainable development, combating terrorism and strengthening genuine multilateralism through various international platforms.

Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni said the summit is important as several issues, including trade, sustainability and international payment systems, were discussed.

She said India, as the host country, had invited all participating nations and that deliberations on these issues could have wider implications for global economic cooperation.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma said BRICS represented countries accounting for nearly half of the world’s population and around 40 per cent of global GDP.

Welcoming the summit being held in India, Sharma said it would open new avenues for the country’s economic growth and development.
