Bhubaneswar: Several parts of Odisha, particularly the southern and coastal districts, experienced heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours under the influence of a depression over the Bay of Bengal.
The weather system has already triggered widespread rain across multiple districts, disrupting normal life in several areas and raising concerns of further intensification.
According to the latest bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chhatrapur recorded the highest rainfall of 52.8 mm, followed closely by Gopalpur with 50 mm. Paradip received 47 mm, Chandbali 45.8 mm, Kendrapara 34 mm, Jagatsinghpur 32 mm, Paralakhemundi 31.6 mm, Dhenkanal 30 mm and Puri 25.8 mm. These figures indicate that the coastal and southern belts remain under the direct influence of the system.
The IMD has predicted that the depression will intensify into a deep depression within the next 12 hours. It is expected to cross the Visakhapatnam-Gopalpur coast by tomorrow evening.
Under its influence, places in south Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could lead to waterlogging, disruption of road and rail traffic, and temporary inconvenience to residents.
Meteorological officials have advised people living in low-lying and coastal areas to remain alert and follow official advisories. Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea.
District administrations in the affected regions have been directed to keep disaster response teams ready and monitor the situation closely as the weather system approaches the coast.
