Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned till tomorrow after heavy pandemonium by the Opposition over the amended MMDR Act and alleged errors in school textbooks.
The House was first adjourned till 4 pm on Wednesday due to noisy protests over the same issues. Earlier in the day, as soon as the Question Hour began on the second day of the monsoon session, Congress and BJD members rushed to the Well of the House and raised slogans demanding withdrawal of the amended Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
BJD legislators also raised the issue of alleged mistakes in school textbooks and sought the government’s response on the matter.
Amid slogan-shouting and placard-waving by Opposition members, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi appealed to the protesting legislators to return to their seats and allow the House to function. However, as the protests continued and normal proceedings could not be conducted, Bhoi adjourned the House till 4 pm.
When the House reassembled at 4 pm, BJD members again stormed into the Well and raised slogans near the Speaker’s podium over the MMDR Act and textbook errors. Unable to run the House amid the continued uproar, Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the proceedings till tomorrow.
