Bhubaneswar: A three-day workshop on geospatial analysis using ArcGIS concluded here on Friday, with officials emphasising the need to strengthen technical capacity and promote the use of geospatial technologies in statistical activities.
The User Consultation Workshop and Capacity Building Programme, organised by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DE&S), Odisha, was held from September 23 to 25 at the Madhusudan Das Regional Academy of Financial Management (MDRAFM) in Chandrasekharpur.
Joint Secretary of the Planning and Convergence Department Anuj Kumar Das Pattanaik, Additional Secretary Pradyumna Mohakud and DE&S Director Manas Ranjan Samal interacted with participants on the concluding day and appreciated the initiative aimed at enhancing technical capabilities and adoption of geospatial tools.
The programme was inaugurated on September 23 by Samal, who stressed the importance of building the technical capabilities of officials and effectively using modern geospatial tools in statistical activities.
The training was organised as part of digitisation initiatives under the World Bank-supported Odisha State Capability and Resilience Growth Programme (OSCRGP), aimed at strengthening the state’s statistical system.
The programme focused on geospatial analysis and the application of ArcGIS for statistical, planning and development-related activities. Officials from DE&S, Regional Institute for Planning, Applied Economics & Statistics (RIPA&E&S), District Planning and Monitoring Units (DPMUs), DE&S’s Project Management Consultancy (PMC), Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC) and Odisha Space Applications Centre (ORSAC) participated.
A total of 38 participants and resource persons were associated with the programme. Technical sessions conducted by resource persons from ESRI India provided hands-on exposure to ArcGIS, geospatial analysis techniques and their application in statistical activities.
The workshop also covered the potential of geospatial technologies in spatial analysis, visualisation and evidence-based planning, supporting data-driven statistical and development processes, the DE&S said.
