Brahmapur: Panic has gripped Patashala village under Dharakote block in Ganjam district following a diarrhoea outbreak that has reportedly claimed one life and affected more than 15 people over the past three days.
The deceased has been identified as 36-year-old Sushanta Malik. Several affected persons have been admitted to nearby health facilities for treatment, with more than five undergoing treatment at the Manikpur Primary Health Centre (PHC).
Following directions from the Ganjam District Collector, medical teams from Dharakote and Manikpur PHC rushed to the village and treated the affected persons. Another health team also visited the area after a few more people reportedly developed symptoms on Wednesday.
According to preliminary information, some of the affected villagers had attended a feast at Podamari and developed diarrhoea after returning home. Health officials have suspected food poisoning as a possible cause, though the exact reason for the outbreak is yet to be established.
Health teams are monitoring the situation and providing treatment to those affected.
