Bhubaneswar: A significant milestone has been achieved in the Kottavalasa–Koraput Doubling Project with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel No. 41-41A, located between Borra Guhalu and Karakavalasa stations in the Rayagada Division of East Coast Railway.
The breakthrough was achieved on 1 October 2026 with 100% accuracy in alignment, marking an important step forward in the ongoing doubling project.
The tunnel, having a total length of 829 metres, has been constructed in a horseshoe shape along an alignment extending up to an 8 degree curve. The breakthrough was achieved in the Borra Guhalu–Karakavalasa block section.
The successful breakthrough of Tunnel No. 41-41A reflects the precision and engineering expertise involved in executing major railway infrastructure works in challenging terrain. The achievement also marks another important advancement towards completion of the Kottavalasa–Koraput Doubling Project.
The completion of this tunnel breakthrough will contribute towards the progressive development of the doubling project and strengthen rail infrastructure in the Kottavalasa–Koraput section. On completion, the doubling project will enhance line capacity, improve operational efficiency and facilitate smoother movement of freight and passenger trains in the region.
