Athagada (Kataka): Local residents and college students, along with Athagada MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain, staged a road blockade here on Tuesday following the death of a college student in a road accident, demanding compensation for her family and deployment of traffic police at Chandbali Square.
The student was killed and another seriously injured after a Hyva truck allegedly hit them from behind at Chandbali Square in Athagada while they were returning home after attending classes, according to reports.
The deceased was reportedly a first-year +2 student of Gopabandhu Women’s Degree College in Athagada and a resident of Deopada village in Dhenkanal district.
The accident took place at Chandbali Square when the two students were travelling home after their classes. One of them died on the spot, while the other sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Athagada Sub-Divisional Hospital (SDH) for treatment.
Following the accident, tension prevailed in the area as college students and local residents gathered at the spot and blocked the road.
The protesters demanded compensation for the deceased student’s family and deployment of traffic police at Chandbali Square to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The road blockade was later expected to be lifted after discussions with the authorities, reports said.
