Vedanta Aluminium Puts Mental Well-Being At The Heart Of Work

Bhubaneswar: Mental well-being shapes how individuals navigate everyday life, build relationships and respond to challenges. Yet conversations around mental health are not always easy, particularly in professional environments where personal concerns often remain unspoken. Beyond access to counselling and professional guidance, creating a healthy workplace means fostering an environment where people feel heard, respected and comfortable seeking help when they need it.

This World Mental Health Day, the UN 2026 theme ‘Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change’brings the importance of listening and understanding individual experiences to the forefront. As workplaces continue to evolve, organisations are increasingly recognising that employee well-being extends beyond physical health. It is shaped by the support people receive, the relationships they build, and the confidence that they can reach out when challenges arise.

At Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, this understanding is reflected in a range of initiatives aimed at making mental health resources more accessible across its operations. For an organisation whose workforce spans mining, refining, smelting and power generation, supporting people means recognising that every employee’s experience is unique. Through counselling services, awareness programmes and employee engagement initiatives, the company is working to make emotional well-being an integral part of everyday employee care.

A key focus area has been ensuring that professional guidance is available when needed. At Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda operations in Odisha, a digital wellness programme currently supports more than 2,900 employees and extends services to their family members. Through a 24/7 counselling helpline, personalised wellness pathways and access to professional guidance, employees can seek assistance at a time and in a manner that suits their individual circumstances, an important consideration for a workforce operating across varied shifts and schedules.

A similar emphasis on accessibility is reflected across the company’s operations. At BALCO in Chhattisgarh, employees can access both digital and in-person counselling sessions, creating multiple avenues for confidential guidance. The programme has recorded 1,189 employee engagements and 169 new registrations in 2026, alongside over 155 counselling sessions conducted since March 2025. These efforts are complemented by the support available through BALCO Medical Centre (BMC), one of the region’s leading cancer care institutions, which provides counselling and psychological support services to patients and their caregivers as they navigate the emotional challenges that often accompany serious medical treatment. By offering professional guidance through multiple touchpoints and circumstances, these initiatives encourage individuals to seek support in ways that best suit their needs.

Alongside access to professional support, creating a culture where conversations around mental well-being are encouraged is equally important. At Vedanta Lanjigarh, home to the company’s alumina refinery, awareness initiatives have helped employees engage with topics such as self-care, emotional resilience and personal well-being. Between August 2024 and March 2025, 488 individuals participated in 749 engagements with the company’s digital wellness partner, including 151 counselling sessions.

Among these initiatives was a Happiness Bootcamp attended by more than 200 employees, which focused on self-awareness and practical approaches to navigating everyday challenges. Complementary sessions on emotional intelligence and personal relationships further encouraged reflection and dialogue. Participants reported an average emotional wellness score of 9.3 out of 10 following counselling sessions, reflecting the positive impact of these efforts and the growing openness around mental health conversations in the workplace.

An employee who participated in the programme added, “The sessions encouraged me to pause, reflect and pay greater attention to my own well-being. More importantly, they reminded me that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness.”

The company’s Coal Mines operations have adopted a similar approach, combining professional guidance with awareness-building activities. Employees have access to confidential counselling through a shared Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), complemented by sensitisation sessions focused on emotional health. During International Yoga Day 2026, approximately 135 employees participated in a two-day programme featuring discussions on stress management, resilience and desk yoga. To mark World Mental Health Day, an online awareness session on emotional well-being and healthy workplace practices is also being organised.

Beyond structured programmes, employee engagement initiatives including leadership interactions, sports, recreational activities, recognition platforms and family-inclusive events create opportunities for people to connect and build a sense of belonging. These experiences reinforce an important understanding: mental well-being is not shaped by a single intervention but by the overall environment in which people work, interact and grow.

Across Vedanta Aluminium’s operations, the approach may vary to reflect local needs and contexts, but the objective remains consistent: ensuring employees know they do not have to navigate life’s challenges alone. Counselling services, awareness initiatives and engagement platforms provide valuable avenues for assistance, but their wider purpose is to encourage a culture where seeking help is viewed as a strength rather than a hesitation.

As conversations around mental health continue to evolve, the most meaningful change often begins with something simple: knowing that someone is willing to listen. Programmes and platforms can provide the framework, but it is empathy, trust and human connection that bring them to life. Ultimately, a healthier workplace is not built only through policies or interventions, but through everyday experiences that help people feel supported, understood and valued. This belief lies at the heart of Vedanta Sustainability and the company’s continued efforts to build workplaces where people can thrive. Across Vedanta in Odisha and its operations nationwide, the focus remains on ensuring that progress is measured not only by what is achieved, but also by how people experience that journey.
