Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped Utkal University in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday after a clash broke out between two groups of students backed by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), respectively, ahead of the student union polls scheduled for October 15.
According to reports, tensions escalated over the alleged presence of non-students at a ‘Why I Stand For’ meeting, triggering a confrontation between the rival groups.
Several chairs were reportedly damaged during the clash, following which the meeting could not be held as scheduled.
On being informed, police personnel rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The Bhubaneswar DCP also reached the university and, along with other police personnel, attempted to pacify the agitated students.
Further details regarding the incident are awaited.
