Bhubaneswar: In a major step to bring justice to the doorstep, ailing and elderly witnesses unable to travel to court can now record their testimonies from home.
The Orissa High Court on Tuesday launched two mobile e-seva vans for the purpose. Chief Justice Harish Tandon flagged off the vans on the high court premises in the presence of judges and senior officials.
The vans are equipped with high-speed multi-network connectivity, high-definition video conferencing facility and power backup systems to ensure uninterrupted recording of evidence.
The service was put to use on the very first day. The evidence of a key witness in an old pending case, a resident of Adhalia in Cuttack Sadar who could not appear in court due to illness, was recorded through the van from his home.
According to high court officials, the vans will be deployed throughout the year to provide legal aid, conduct awareness camps, assist with digital filing and court fee payments, and extend judicial services to villages and remote areas.
Following the launch, the Odisha State Legal Services Authority (OSLSA) organised a public awareness camp at Paga Weekly Market in Jagatpur.
