Jayapur: The Sabar Shrikhetra Tunnel, built under the Bharatmala Pariyojana project in Odisha’s Koraput district, showcases a blend of modern infrastructure and the region’s rich tribal art, culture and traditions.
The tunnel has acquired a distinctive identity through its name, traditional black-and-white patterns at the entrance and artistic paintings on its inner walls. The artwork reflects Koraput’s indigenous heritage and the cultural association between the Sabar community’s traditions and Jagannath culture.
Equipped with modern lighting, traffic safety signals and a well-designed roadway, the tunnel reflects an effort to integrate aesthetic elements with infrastructure development. The paintings on its walls highlight both Koraputia traditions and the cultural ethos of Sabar Shrikhetra.
The name ‘Sabar Shrikhetra’ underscores the connection between the tribal heritage of Koraput and Jagannath culture, lending cultural significance to the infrastructure project.
During a visit to the tunnel with a group of media representatives, the distinctive design and cultural motifs were highlighted as an example of how infrastructure projects can reflect the identity and pride of the region while improving the travel experience.
The tunnel is expected to make journeys through the region more pleasant while serving as a symbol of Koraput’s cultural heritage.
