Bhubaneswar: The conjoined twins with two heads and a single body born at MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, died after seven days of treatment in the SNCU.
The newborn was under round-the-clock monitoring by a team of newborn experts at the premier medical institute. The baby, having one body and two heads, died today during treatment, hospital sources said.
The twins were born to a 22-year-old first-time mother from Kandhamal district. The premature male baby, weighing 2.25 kg, was delivered on October 11 through a lower-segment caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia when the mother was over 32 weeks pregnant.
According to the MKCG Superintendent, the condition is medically termed as dicephalic parapagus, an extremely rare form of conjoined twinning where two heads are joined side-by-side to one common body. The extent of sharing of internal organs varies from case to case.
Soon after birth, the newborn was kept in the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) where doctors were closely monitoring his respiration, heart rate and other vital parameters.
