Jajpur: Jajpur police have seized 200 grams of brown sugar, estimated to be worth Rs 20 lakh in the grey market, and arrested two persons in a joint anti-narcotics operation by Kuakhia police and the district police’s Special Squad.
The raid was conducted at Mulapal Chhak around 1.45 pm on Wednesday under the direction of Jajpur SP Yashpratap Shrimal.
The arrested persons have been identified as Nishikant Mallik (46) of Rajendrapur in Gangadharpur and Satyaranjan Sahu (35) of Karajanga.
Police seized three mobile phones, Rs 4,700 in cash, five bank passbooks and five ATM cards from their possession. Five bank accounts have also been frozen as part of the investigation.
Investigators suspect that Sahu was handling financial transactions linked to the illegal drug trade.
Police said two earlier cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, registered at Kuakhia police station against Mallik, were already pending. Non-bailable warrants had also been issued against him by a court in connection with those cases.
A fresh case (No. 437/26) has been registered at Kuakhia police station under Sections 21(b) and 29(1) of the NDPS Act.
Sub-Inspector Suryanarayan Sahu lodged the complaint, while Inspector-in-Charge Sushant Kumar Sethi is investigating the case.
The SP said both accused would be produced before a court.
