Baripada: A local court on Friday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a 22-year-old woman with disabilities in Mayurbhanj district in 2025.
Ad hoc Additional District and Sessions Judge-cum-Fast Track Special Court Judge S K Nayak also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on the convict, Saroj Kumar Behera. In case of default in payment, he will have to undergo an additional year of imprisonment, Special Public Prosecutor Prabhat Kumar Behera said.
According to the prosecution, Saroj took the woman to an isolated place in May 2025 and sexually assaulted her.
Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family, Kuliana police registered a case and arrested the accused. The case was subsequently tried in the Fast Track Special Court, which awarded the life sentence.
