Puri: General darshan at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri was temporarily suspended on Tuesday after a devotee vomited near the Dhukudi Dwar, prompting the temple authorities to undertake the Bada Mahasnana ritual of the deities.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) said darshan would remain suspended for approximately one-and-a-half hours until the ritual was completed.
According to temple sources, the incident occurred after the conclusion of the second Bhoga Mandap ritual of the day, when a devotee fell ill and vomited near the Dhukudi Dwar.
As per temple traditions, vomiting or spitting within the temple premises is treated as ashoucha (ritual impurity), necessitating an immediate Mahasnana of the deities.
Accordingly, preparations were initiated for the Bada Mahasnana of Mahaprabhu in accordance with prescribed rituals and scriptural traditions.
The SJTA has appealed to devotees to cooperate with the temple authorities during the ritual and the temporary suspension of darshan.
