Bhubaneswar: The story of a modern aluminium business is often told through numbers. Production records, capacity expansions, operational milestones and sustainability targets tend to dominate the narrative. But as industries evolve and technology reshapes the workplace, another factor is becoming increasingly important – the ability of people to learn, adapt and grow.
For Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, building a future-ready workforce goes beyond hiring talent. It is about equipping employees with the skills, tools, opportunities and support they need to thrive in a rapidly changing industrial environment.
Across its operations, the company is investing in continuous learning, digital capability, inclusion, early talent development and wellbeing, recognising that long-term growth depends as much on people as it does on technology and infrastructure.
This philosophy is reflected in the culture of innovation taking shape across the business. At the alumina refinery in Lanjigada, employees are helping drive operational improvements that strengthen efficiency, reliability and resource optimisation.
In 2026, seven refinery teams were recognised at the Productivity Excellence Awards for projects ranging from improving mixing tank reliability to reducing water consumption in calciner operations. While the solutions addressed specific operational challenges, they also highlighted a broader mindset, one where employees are encouraged to identify opportunities, solve problems and take ownership of outcomes.
As manufacturing becomes more technology-driven, the ability to learn, adapt and innovate is becoming just as important as technical expertise. To help employees keep pace with this transformation, Vedanta Aluminium is investing in new approaches to learning and capability building. At BALCO, employees have begun accessing operational guidance through ALAISA, a humanoid AI-enabled support platform that brings knowledge closer to the point of work. More than 100 employees participated in the initiative during its initial phase, using the tool to strengthen their understanding of operating procedures, safety requirements and workplace practices.
While at Lanjigada, the humanoid robot Vedika is supporting inductions, training and assessments. Vedika recently conducted its first induction programme for the new GET and PGET batch of 2026, demonstrating how emerging technologies can make learning more interactive and accessible.
The commitment to learning extends beyond digital tools. Across locations, employees are benefiting from structured learning programmes, digital modules and peer-led knowledge-sharing initiatives that encourage the exchange of technical expertise and practical experience. The objective is clear: to create an environment where learning is continuous and improvement becomes part of everyday work.
At the same time, VAML is expanding opportunities for greater participation across its workforce. At Jharsuguda, an all-women locomotive crew manages a critical logistics function, underscoring how inclusion is increasingly reflected not only in representation but also in operational responsibility.
The company is equally focused on nurturing the next generation of talent. Through Project Panchhi, more than 180 young women have completed internships across over 30 business functions in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. By working alongside experienced professionals on live assignments, they gain firsthand exposure to the realities of a large industrial enterprise, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace experience.
The impact of this people-centric approach is increasingly being recognised beyond the organisation. In 2026, Jharsuguda received the Grow Care India HR Excellence Award, while Lanjigada earned BW People Gold for Digital Learning Transformation and Silver for Best Learning Strategy.
BALCO was also honoured with the Mahatma Award for Human Resource Excellence 2026, recognising its efforts in nurturing talent, fostering an inclusive workplace and creating opportunities for employees to grow and excel.
Whether driving operational excellence, embracing innovation, mentoring future talent or creating more inclusive workplaces, employees remain at the heart of the company’s progress, proving that behindevery milestone is a human story worth telling.
