Malkangiri: Undeterred by his defeat in the recently conducted election for the post of Chairman of Malkangiri Municipality, Congress candidate G. Srinivas Rao popularly called ‘Chiti Bhai’ is fulfilling the promises he made during campaigning.
During his campaigning, Rao had promised to sink 10 tube wells in different localities of the municipality.
With an aim to mitigate the problem of drinking water supply needs of the people in the harsh summer Rao has started sinking tube-wells meeting the expenses from his own pocket.
On Thursday he sunk a tube-well at Ward no.9, hardly at a distance of 100 mt from the district Collector’s residence.
“During my campaigning, I had felt the problems faced by the inhabitants of Damnagata in Ward no. 9 for drinking water. This place is very near to the Collector’s residence, hardly 100 mts away. They had to walk about a kilometre to fetch drinking water. I had promised them to sink a tube-well within 24 hours of my win and if I get defeated I would sink one within a week. So yesterday I did it,” said Rao.
Rao informed that there are several problems faced by the people in various Wards and therefore, a get-together of the winning and defeated candidates has been called on coming Sunday.
“We will be visiting door to door in all the 19 Wards of the municipality and prepare a list of the problems faced by them and place them at the municipality office. We will wait for 10-15 days and if these are not resolved within that time we will resort to agitation,” Rao stated.
“We were facing great hardship to get drinking water. Earlier we had met the Collector, the Chairman over our problem but no one resolved it. Even though Chiti babu has been defeated he has kept his promise and sunk a tube well. We thank him,” said Laxmi Muduli, a resident of Damnagata in Ward no. 9.
