Gwalior/Lucknow: Eight people from Uttar Pradesh were killed, and several others were injured after a truck collided with the vehicle carrying labourers in the Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred around 1:00 a.m. near Chhimaka village in the Gohad area. Preliminary investigations reveal that the speeding pickup truck lost control and collided with an oncoming dumper truck while attempting to avoid a herd of cows on the highway, officials said.

The impact was so severe that the pickup was badly mangled, and the labourers inside were thrown into a state of panic and screaming.

According to the police, all the labourers in the pickup were residents of the Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh. They had come to the Gwalior region for paddy transplantation work and were returning home in the pickup after completing the job.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the Gohad Chauraha police station team rushed to the scene. With the help of villagers, the police extricated those trapped in the pickup and immediately rushed the injured to Gohad Hospital.

Doctors at the hospital declared eight labourers dead. Those critically injured were referred to Gwalior for advanced treatment following initial first aid. The bodies of the deceased have been placed in the mortuary, and the police are working to identify them and contact their families. The administration has also initiated the process of transporting the mortal remains to their home district.

Expressing deep grief over the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased.

Describing the incident as deeply distressing, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to X and said that the loss of life in the tragic accident in Bhind is “extremely painful and heart-wrenching” and offered condolences to the bereaved families.

He directed officials to coordinate with the Madhya Pradesh government to ensure the mortal remains of the deceased are transported to their home district and to arrange for proper medical treatment for the injured.
