Amaravati: The government of Andhra Pradesh on Friday notified five model E-Mobility cities across the state, marking a major step towards building a sustainable, technology-driven, and future-ready urban mobility ecosystem.

Five model E-Mobility cities represent the five administrative regions of the state. These cities are Visakhapatnam in North Andhra, Rajahmundry in Godavari region, Vijayawada in Central Andhra, Nellore in South Andhra and Tirupati in Rayalaseema.

The government issued orders operationalising the Andhra Pradesh Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0) 2024–29.

The Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department approved the Operational Framework and Strategic Roadmap for implementation of the policy in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

The initiative is aimed at transforming Andhra Pradesh into one of India’s leading hubs for electric mobility adoption, EV infrastructure development, green urban transport systems, and sustainable urban planning, while aligning with the State’s long-term vision of achieving carbon neutrality in the transport sector by 2047, said an official release.

Operational framework envisages development of high-density EV charging infrastructure, green routes, green channels, battery swapping stations, zero emission zones, and integrated electric mobility ecosystems in the identified cities.

The framework also proposes a strategic charging infrastructure network with one EV charging station per 3×3 km grid within E-Mobility cities and one EV charging station every 30 km along inter-city Green Channels/highways

The government has also proposed utilisation of a dedicated Rs 250 crore Corpus Fund under the AP Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0), with Rs 50 crore earmarked for each Model E-Mobility City to support infrastructure deployment, grid strengthening, fleet electrification, innovation pilots, viability gap funding, and consumer adoption initiatives.

The framework provides for a phased and integrated implementation approach covering EV charging stations, battery swapping infrastructure, green freight corridors, electric public transport systems, renewable energy integration, smart urban mobility planning, Zero Emission Zones (ZEZs) and Dedicated City E-Mobility Cells (CEMCs).

As part of the implementation strategy, city-specific interventions have also been proposed. Green tourism mobility, electric BRTS corridors, and green freight corridors have been proposed for Visakhapatnam. Model Green Routes along BRTS corridors and logistics-focused EV infrastructure are proposed for Vijayawada.

Electrification of river transport systems and green goods corridors are proposed for Rajahmundry. EV logistics systems for fisheries and coastal transport infrastructure are mooted for Nellore and Full electrification of Tirumala shuttle systems and Zero Emission pilgrim mobility zones for Tirupati.
