Bengal: Former TMC MLA Sent To 14 Day Custody In RG Kar Case

Kolkata: A district court on Friday remanded former Trinamool Congress legislator, Nirmal Ghosh, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with his alleged involvement in the larger conspiracy behind the rape and murder of a lady junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.

The main charge against Ghosh is that he was one of the three principal masterminds ensuring a hurried cremation of the victim’s body at a crematorium in Panihati, allegedly breaching cremation‑related protocols to eliminate chances of a second post‑mortem.

On Friday, after Ghosh, who was arrested from neighbouring Odisha on Thursday, was presented at the district court at Barrackpore, his counsel moved a bail plea on medical grounds.

His counsel pleaded that his client, being 78 years old and suffering from age‑related ailments, needed sustained treatment and hence bail should be granted. However, the public prosecutor opposed the plea, citing the seriousness of the charges in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case.

The district court judge rejected the bail plea and remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.

On August 8, while addressing a programme at Panihati, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a fresh probe by the Barrackpore Police Commissariat into the “conspired” and “hurried” cremation of the victim’s body.

Thereafter, the victim’s father filed a fresh police complaint at Khardah Police Station. Based on that complaint, a fresh FIR was registered naming Ghosh, a local Trinamool councillor from Panihati Municipality, Somnath Dey, and Sanjeev Banerjee, a neighbour of the victim’s family.

Ghosh had been absconding since then and was finally arrested on Thursday night from neighbouring Odisha.

Meanwhile, police also arrested Banerjee, while Dey is still absconding.
