Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), on Monday, granted 10 days of additional time to Trinamool Congress general secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha member, Abhishek Banerjee, to reply to notices served regarding the 17 properties owned by him.

Abhishek Banerjee is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The KMC had recently issued the notices. Municipality officials also put up a notice on the wall of his house on Harish Mukherjee Road in south Kolkata’s Bhabanipur area.

The original deadline to reply to the notices was midnight on Monday.

However, on Sunday, information surfaced that Abhishek Banerjee’s counsel had sent a letter to the KMC seeking time to reply to the notices.

Accordingly, on Monday, it was learnt that the KMC authorities had granted him 10 more days to reply to the notices.

In the notices, questions were raised on whether permission from the civic body had been taken for any additional construction at his residences.

The notice was sent to Abhishek Banerjee to reply to the queries before any action could be decided upon.

Meanwhile, a team of plainclothes Kolkata Police personnel suddenly appeared at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, named “Santiniketan”, on Harish Mukherjee Road in south Kolkata on Monday afternoon.

However, no intimation had been given by the Kolkata Police to media persons regarding the reasons behind the sudden visit to “Santiniketan”.

The police personnel remained inside for some time before coming out carrying a monitor.

They kept the monitor inside a white vehicle bearing a “Kolkata Police” sticker.

After the police personnel left Abhishek Banerjee’s house, a car left the garage there.

That car is registered in the name of a company reportedly owned by some members of the Banerjee family.

The house “Santiniketan” is also registered in the same company’s name with the municipality.

There has been considerable speculation over why the police suddenly went to the Trinamool Congress MP’s residence.

When asked, an official from the city police claimed ignorance of the matter.
