CSIR-IICT To Promote Surgical Adhesive For Rapid Wound Closure

Kolkata: The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), a laboratory under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has come up with a unique adhesive to close wounds, both after surgeries and during accidents, officials said on Saturday.

The product has been licenced and while IICT has already tied up with a pharmaceutical company and launched it, the laboratory has asked for more partners for further commercialisation.

According to researchers, it is an indigenous, biocompatible tissue adhesive based on alkyl 2-cyanoacrylate technology for rapid wound closure and tissue sealing that provides instant bonding under moist conditions while reducing the need for sutures in selected surgical procedures.

The adhesive has undergone clinical trials and declared safe for surgical use.

It bonds quickly in moist environments, making it suitable for trauma care and emergency medical procedures.

The adhesive also allows tissue sealing in surgeries, both with or without sutures.

“It is instant and ready to use, requiring no special preparation. Its biocompatible formulation makes it safe for use on humans. It reduces the needs for sutures in certain surgeries. It is effective in moist conditions, enhancing surgical efficiency,” a scientist said.

The glue is ideal for ENT, vascular, cosmetic, dental and periodontal surgeries.

Its use has also been highlighted in procedures such as appendectomy, caesarian section, histerectomy, laproscopy and biopsy.

“This is a safe and cheap product. Our aim is to make it more accessible to hospitals and emergency healthcare providers. While providing convenience to medical practitioners, this adhesive will also come as a comfort for patients who may no longer require sutures,” the scientist said.

Set up in Hyderabad in 1944, IICT is one of the oldest laboratories under CSIR.

Over the years, it has come up with several products and is a reliable destination for the chemical and biotech industry.

Both CSIR and IICT are on constant lookout for industry to partner it in the development of latest technology.

Several state governments have also come forward to use and promote indigenous technologies developed by CSIR and its laboratories.
