Greater Noida, May 20 (IANS) Widening the ambit of investigation into the death of Deepika Nagar, the Greater Noida Police on Wednesday arrested her mother-in-law, taking the total number of arrested accused to four.

Deepika’s mother-in-law, named Poonam, was the second arrest by the Greater Noida Police on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, an individual named Vinod, who is the uncle of Deepika’s husband Ritik, was arrested by the police. All of them are understood to be involved in the crime and were allegedly harassing Deepika mentally and emotionally, forcing her to arrange more cash and a Fortuner car from her parents.

With these two arrests, the total number rises to four as the deceased’s husband, Ritik and his father, Manoj, are already in police custody.

Deepika Nagar, a 24-year-old woman, had jumped to her death from the terrace in her marital home, after being subjected to cruelty and mental agony over demands for ‘additional dowry’ on a daily basis.

According to the police, the Ecotech-3 Police Station team arrested Ritik’s mother, Poonam, a resident of Jalpura, with the assistance of local intelligence and surveillance teams.

After the alleged suicide of Deepika Nagar on May 17, her family members levelled serious allegations of dowry harassment and torture against her in-laws. Based on this complaint, the police registered a case and initiated an investigation. During the investigation, the police first arrested the deceased’s father-in-law, Manoj, and her husband, Ritik, on May 18.

Police officials state that the matter is being investigated thoroughly, and evidence is being gathered while taking all relevant aspects into consideration.

The police have asserted that strict legal action will be taken against those found guilty. Meanwhile, the incident has sparked outrage in the locality, and the deceased’s family are demanding severe punishment for the accused.
