New Delhi: The Union government has given a one-year extension in service to Rahul Navin, Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director, starting August 13, an official said on Sunday.

A circular issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievance and Pensions said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in tenure of IRS officer Rahul Navin, as Director of Enforcement Directorate for a period of one year beyond August 13 i.e. up to August 13, 2027, including extension in service beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. July 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

The ED, established in 1956, completed its 70 years on May 1, 2026.

As the premier financial investigative agency, the ED is entrusted with the enforcement of laws pertaining to foreign exchange management and the prevention of money laundering.

Earlier speaking at the 70th Enforcement Day celebrations, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary described the agency as the shield protecting the nation against financial crimes.

The Minister of State emphasised that the powers given to the ED are aimed at combating financial crimes such as money laundering, hawala transactions, benami properties and corporate frauds, and not to target individuals.

Emphasising the need for strong enforcement, he noted that such crimes pose a serious threat to the economy and the common citizen.

The Minister of State also highlighted that as of March 31 this year, the ED had attached assets worth around 2.36 lakh crore rupees, of which more than 63,000 crore rupees have been returned to rightful owners, including banks, investors and homebuyers.

Referring to emerging challenges, Minister of State Chaudhary said that cyber fraud and online financial crimes are rising concerns and called for stronger cooperation among central agencies to tackle them effectively.

The Minister of State reiterated that the Union government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, follows a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.

The Union Minister Chaudhary also inaugurated the ED’s Jaipur Zonal office during the occasion.

Addressing the event, ED Director Rahul Navin said the nature of financial offences has shifted from bank frauds and corporate scams to cryptocurrency fraud, cyber-enabled crimes, terror financing and narcotics trafficking.

He noted that the ED has adapted proactively to these emerging threats, with a focused strategy to disrupt criminal networks by targeting their financial roots.

Highlighting global cooperation, Rahul Navin said that India’s role in anti-money laundering efforts has strengthened, with the ED contributing to international frameworks and asset recovery networks.
