Kolkata: An FIR has been lodged against the Trinamool Congress’ General Secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee for violating the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, said the police on Thursday.

The FIR was filed at the Kalighat police station in South Kolkata following a complaint lodged by a resident of Baguiati against Abhishek Banerjee.

The person, named Rajiv Sarkar, has made several allegations against Banerjee in his complaint. He claimed that security guards were dangerously driving Banerjee’s car, which violated several sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the police, many security guards are often seen standing on the footrest of Banerjee’s car while the vehicle is in motion.

The person alleged that, as per the Motor Vehicle Act (Section 123), no driver or passenger can travel in a moving vehicle while hanging. Secondly, according to Section 184, dangerous driving in a moving vehicle is a punishable offence. Therefore, the complainant has demanded appropriate action against Banerjee in this incident.

A case has been registered against Banerjee under Sections 281 (any person driving or riding a vehicle on a public way in a rash or negligent manner that endangers human life or is likely to cause injury), 125 (rash driving), 223 (disobedience of lawful orders) and 3(5) (common intention) of BNS and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

It may be noted that Abhishek Banerjee is already facing corruption charges. He has been under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a long time. The signature mismatch case and his controversial “DJ will be played after May 4” remark case have mounted his problems.

Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has withdrawn Abhishek Banerjee’s protection in the defamation case filed by BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya’s son Akash Vijayvargiya.

There have also been allegations of corruption against Banerjee’s initiative ‘Sebashray’, which he started for the residents of the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.

Amidst all these cases, a new FIR has been filed. Banerjee is yet to respond to the latest FIR against him.
