Gujarat: First Tree-Integrated Green Bus Shelter Opens In Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad has introduced its first tree-integrated green bus shelter as part of a pilot project aimed at making public transport infrastructure more sustainable while preserving existing trees.

The shelter has been developed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) at the Acher AMTS Station near Rajul Park Society in the Sabarmati area, incorporating a mature tree into its design instead of removing it.

The project has been undertaken under the guidance of Mayor Hitesh Barot, Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, Standing Committee Chairman Kamlesh Patel, and other civic officials as part of AMC’s efforts to create a more environmentally friendly, comfortable, and visually appealing public transport system.

Unlike conventional bus shelters, the structure has been designed around a decades-old tree, allowing passengers to benefit from natural shade, improved air quality and protection from the heat while waiting for buses.

AMC said the shelter has also been designed to become greener over time. Specially selected ‘Vernonia elliptica climber’ plants will be introduced over the coming months to spread across the roof naturally.

Once fully grown, the vegetation is expected to cover the roof, providing additional shade, lowering surface temperatures, improving the surrounding air quality and creating a greener public space.

The bus shelter has been constructed using sustainable and durable materials. Its dual-layer roof combines weather-resistant fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) sheets with cement sheet boards to help reduce the internal temperature.

Powder-coated mild steel columns support the structure, while ergonomic high-pressure laminate (HPL) benches have been installed for passenger seating.

An RCC platform has also been built around the tree to protect it and ensure the structure’s long-term durability.

In line with AMC’s focus on resource conservation and the circular economy, recycled Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste has been used in the anti-skid paving blocks and curb stones.

Passenger amenities at the shelter include energy-efficient LED lighting, an intelligent rainwater system, a modern commuter information board and high-quality signage.

According to AMC, the project is intended to be more than a conventional waiting area by creating a public transport facility that evolves into a greener urban space over time.

“The pilot could serve as a model for future bus shelters and other public transport locations across Ahmedabad by showcasing how existing trees can be integrated into modern infrastructure while improving passenger comfort and environmental sustainability,” officials said.
