Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the major Hindu festivals celebrated across the country. The festival symbolises the victory of good over evil and is observed on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin.
This year, Dussehra is being celebrated on Tuesday, October 20.
The festival is associated with Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and his reunion with Sita after rescuing her from captivity. The occasion is observed with religious ceremonies, cultural programmes and community celebrations in different parts of India.
One of the most prominent traditions associated with Dussehra is Ravana Dahan, the ritual burning of effigies of Ravana. The event symbolises the destruction of evil and the ultimate victory of righteousness.
Beyond its religious significance, Dussehra serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of truth, justice, moral conduct and harmony. The festival is celebrated through diverse customs and traditions across India, reflecting the country’s cultural diversity and shared values.
