KMC Summons Abhishek Banerjee’s Father Over Alleged Building Rule Violations In Kalighat

Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Friday issued a notice to Amit Banerjee, father of Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee, seeking explanations over alleged building-rule violations at two residential properties in the Kalighat area of south Kolkata.

The notice directs Amit Banerjee to appear before the Buildings Department of KMC’s Borough IX office with relevant documents related to the two properties. There was no immediate response from him, and it remains unclear whether he will appear before the civic body as directed. Amit Banerjee is the brother of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Corporation is already investigating the alleged irregularities in the construction of different properties linked to the Banerjee family at Kalighat, especially whether the constructions were made as per the rules of the KMC or not.

According to officials, the inquiry is focused on determining whether construction at the properties exceeded approved specifications or deviated from sanctioned building plans.

The development follows recent inspections by the officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat. Notices had also been served to members of the household. Subsequently, Amit Banerjee and his wife, Lata Banerjee, moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the notices issued by the civic body.

In their petition, they maintained that the two properties were constructed in full compliance with KMC building regulations and no rules had been violated. They sought quashing of the notices.

The notices were issued under Section 401 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, which empowers the civic body to seek approved building plans, construction-related documents and permissions for verification.

Sources said that properties owned by Leaps & Bounds Private Limited are also under KMC scrutiny. Amit Banerjee is one of the directors of the company.
