Met Office Issues Orange Alert In Coastal Districts Of Bengal Till Monday

Kolkata: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata on Sunday issued an orange alert in coastal districts of West Bengal till Monday. At the same time, the weather office predicted light to moderate rain in all southern districts of the state till Monday, with the possibility of heavy rain in some.

In this regard, Met Department official Sourish Banerjee said that a low-pressure area has formed in the northwest Bay of Bengal. It will increase in strength in the next two days and cross Gangetic West Bengal and North Odisha. As a result, there is a possibility of heavy rain in the coast and adjacent districts.

“Keeping in mind the possibility of rough seas, a warning has been issued for fishermen till Monday. Fishermen have been prohibited from going to sea in the districts of North Odisha coast and Gangetic West Bengal coast,” he said.

The rain has been falling since Saturday. And, the weather office said there is a possibility of heavy rain in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia and Bankura districts during the day and could continue on Monday as well.

Very heavy rain warning (orange alert) has been issued for the coastal districts of the state and districts adjacent to Odisha. The Met Department has also issued an orange warning of very heavy rain in East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram districts.

Meanwhile, a forecast of scattered rain with thunderstorms is in north Bengal too. Rain may increase on Monday. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of scattered heavy rain in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts.

At the same time, light to moderate rain with thunderstorm is also likely in Kolkata till Monday. There is a possibility of one or two spells of heavy rain during the day.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Kolkata and its surrounding areas was 33.06 degrees Celsius, which is 01.01 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was 27.02 degrees Celsius, which is 00.06 degrees Celsius above normal. The relative humidity was a maximum of 94 per cent and a minimum of 66 per cent, as per the weather office.
