Mumbai: Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty, has made a bold statement saying that he doesn’t harbour political ambitions.

The Dadasaheb Phalke award recipient spoke with IANS in Kolkata recently, and explained why he does not contest elections or aspire to be the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

He said his focus is on cherishing what life has given him, including top honours like the Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings and expressing gratitude rather than political ambition.

The veteran actor told IANS, “I don’t have any political ambition. I am not able to handle what God has given me so far, 2nd biggest civilian award, Padma Bhushan. Dadasaheb Phalke award, India’s highest honour in cinema. You have given so much to a poor kid like me who came from a footpath. I am not able to handle it”.

He further mentioned, “I don’t fight because if I fight, I will be limited in one place. I don’t want to be limited. Once I enter a place, I will stay there. But I won’t go to another place. I will go there and campaign there. I will stay there, eat and drink. That is my way of doing things. Everyone will fight in another place. Let them win. After that, the party will decide”.

As a political figure, Mithun has covered the full spectrum of left to right. He was reportedly involved in the Naxalbari movement when he was very young, he left the movement after his family suffered a crisis. He then went on to graduate from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), became a superstar, tried his luck in politics with great returns. He joined TMC, which lies at the centre-left of the political spectrum, and now is in BJP, which is a right-wing party.

Meanwhile, the Vidhan Sabha elections in West Bengal are scheduled to be held April 23 and April 29, 2026 to elect all 294 members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
