Shillong: As part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by the Election Commission of India, a total of 34,730 electors across four Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills district have been identified for verification after being found either unmapped with the 2005 electoral roll or having discrepancies in their electoral records, officials said on Friday.

According to North Garo Hills District Election Officer, M.S.N. Marak, notices have so far been served to 30,580 of the electors identified for verification.

The hearing process, which commenced on August 18, is being conducted across polling stations in the district.

As of August 27, hearings had been completed in 47 of the total 190 polling stations covering the four constituencies.

Kharkutta Assembly constituency has reported the highest number of electors requiring verification, with 11,796 cases identified.

Notices have been delivered to 10,890 electors, while hearings have been completed in 14 of its 62 polling stations.

In Mendipathar, authorities identified 6,830 electors for verification and served notices to 5,720 of them. Hearings have been completed in 12 of the constituency’s 40 polling stations.

Resubelpara recorded 7,685 electors requiring verification, with 6,720 notices issued. Hearings have so far been completed in nine of its 41 polling stations.

Meanwhile, Bajengdoba reported 8,419 electors requiring verification. Notices have been delivered to 7,250 electors, while hearings have been completed in 12 of the constituency’s 47 polling stations.

The district administration said the hearing exercise is continuing in the remaining polling stations according to schedules published on the North Garo Hills district administration’s website.

The claims and objections period, which began on August 5, will remain open until September 4. Following this, the process of issuing notices and disposing of cases will continue until October 3.

The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 7.

Officials said the district SIR helpline has not received any calls so far. The ongoing exercise is part of the electoral roll revision process aimed at verifying voter records and addressing discrepancies before publication of the final roll.
