Jabalpur: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday visited Bargi Dam in Jabalpur following the cruise boat accident and met with the families of the victims, assuring them of support and a thorough investigation into the incident.

During the visit, the Chief Minister interacted with bereaved families and survivors, expressing condolences and offering reassurance. He also visited the residence of one of the deceased victims and met family members.

“A tragic accident has occurred at the Narmada River. So far, nine bodies have been recovered, and 28 people have been rescued. The state government stands firmly with all affected families,” he said, talking to the media.

The Chief Minister also met survivor Riyaz Hussain, who was trapped inside the vessel for several hours before being rescued. Officials said rescue efforts continued through the night.

Mohan Yadav announced that a high-level inquiry committee would be set up to investigate the incident. He said the committee will examine the causes of the accident and whether safety protocols were followed, adding that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.

He added that the government would introduce Standard Operating Procedures for boating and adventure tourism activities to improve safety and prevent such incidents in the future.

The Chief Minister announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased, while PM Modi announced an additional Rs 2 lakh in assistance.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar, who also visited the spot on Friday, alleged serious lapses in safety measures and demanded accountability from the government.

“This incident reflects administrative negligence. Basic safety measures, such as life jackets and proper weather monitoring, were missing. The government must take strict action against those responsible instead of limiting itself to ordering inquiries,” he said.
